Zithromax
Acne is always an annoyance, but in some cases it can become a severe problem, leading to deep facial scars and emotional trauma. For the former cases, there are over-the-counter acne treatments – usually facial cleansers, scrubs and the like – which are better suited to preventative efforts. For the latter, there are strong anti-acne prescriptions, such as Zithromax.
A product from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer (well renowned for its life-altering medications), Zithromax is actually prescribed for a wide-array of bacteria-caused sickness – everything from sinusitis to sexually transmitted diseases. But patients noticed that its active ingredient (the antibiotic azithromycin) also does an exceptional job of killing bacteria in the skin, the main problem behind acne.
Currently, Zithromax is prescribed primarily for adults suffering from extreme acne problems. A typical round of the antibiotic is handed out in so-called Z-Packs, with tablets of either 250 or 500 mg, but a doctor could also decide to create a more specialized plan for certain individuals. Frequently, the drug is covered by insurance, but not always, since it sometimes considered a cosmetic-only issue. In these instances, the price is upwards of several hundred dollars.
Many people who undergo a round of Zithromax to treat acne problems have experienced positive results. Unlike over-the-counter topical treatments, Zithromax kills the bacteria causing acne. However, the benefits of this drug should be weighed against the possible side-effects, which include headaches, stomach pain, and nausea. Those who are allergic to erythromycin could also experience a severe allergic reaction. It also renders some prescription birth control pills ineffective.
