Is Yasmin Good for Birth Control?

Women are all different, with different needs and habits, so it is a good thing that there are a lot of different types of birth control. That way, there’s something for everyone. Women who experience bad bouts of premenstrual syndrome or frequently suffer from acne, for example, may find triple the relief in Yasmin, a recently available contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy, controls symptoms of PMS and has been demonstrated to clear up some women's skin. Like you, it is a multi-tasker. But what’s inside of that small pill you take to prevent pregnancy?

Yasmin is actually a hormone (DRSP) which is taken in 24 day cycles, with 4 days of no-hormone pills between the cycles. Because of this, Yasmin is sometimes referred to as the 24/4 pill. This schedule sets it apart from other birth control pills which require longer no-hormone days. It also differs from other pills in that this one addresses certain symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) - particularly bloating, because it contains a diuretic (normally, water is good for your body but as it gears up for a menstruation, it begins to retain too much, leaving you with bloating that makes your jeans strain to fit, gives you a painful, uncomfortable sensation and can make your limbs swell). Other symptoms it helps are breast sensitivity and the cramps which are readily associated with having a period.

Somewhat surprisingly, it also gives you better skin. It accomplishes this by better controlling your hormones, particularly by cleansing your body of excess male hormones which contribute to acne problems. It doesn’t work quite as well as say, a prescription acne treatment (it won’t clear up a severe problem), but it does address mild problems – and for many women, that’s all that they need.

Even more surprising is the fact that it addresses a sister of premenstrual syndrome – something known as PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which can lead to severe depression in some women.

But, side benefits are nothing if the pill does not perform its most essential duty: preventing pregnancy. And, indeed, Yasmin is an effective way of engaging in sexual intercourse while all but eliminating the risk of pregnancy. Those who take it are 99.97% likely to not conceive. Of course, in order to get those statistics, you have to follow the directions exactly.

While you are reaping all of the benefits, don’t forget that there’s a little bit of the opposite, as well. Some women on Yasmin will experience bleeding in between periods. This may be an inconvenience but in fact, the bleeding is often slight and passes quickly (if it does not you should consult a doctor as soon as possible). You may also have headaches and tenderness – especially when you first begin taking the Yasmin pill.

Yasmin won’t fit everyone; some women might react poorly to it and others still may prefer their birth control to take the form of a shot or a condom. Still, for those it does suit, Yasmin could make all the difference in the world.
