Diflucan and Thrush

Yeast infections are an unfortunate reality for many women. Symptoms of a yeast infection - also known as thrush or vaginal candidiasis in the medical world – include anything from a mild itch in a woman’s private areas to an outright painful burning sensation. Living comfortably with the infection is simply not an option, however, so a doctor will frequently prescribe Diflucan (or fluconazole) for thrush. But what does it really do?

As the name would suggest, a yeast infection is caused by the overflow of yeast - in this case, Candida Albicans. Your body naturally sustains a certain level of Candida, along with a plethora of other natural flora, but balance is always the key. As Barry White once sang, too much of anything isn’t good for you. Sometimes the body can become overrun with the yeast, usually the result of stressful times, too many antibiotics or even your decision to change up your regular eating habits. The balance is disrupted, and the yeast begins to thrive.

That’s where the Diflucan comes in. It can be given in two very different ways. The first way is orally; a patient simply swallows down a pill. It can also be administered directly into the vagina, via a small tablet. Pills are used for severe yeast infections while tablets are applied to more easily remedied situations. In both instances, Diflucan functions by lessening the presence of yeast in the body, and therefore restoring the body’s natural balance.

Diflucan is not a cure-all for yeast infections. While it does remedy the imbalance when administered, it does nothing to alter the bodily conditions which allowed the imbalance to occur. The body is susceptible to a second infection if those causes (be they stress, diet, etc.) are not addressed separately.
