The Pros and Cons of Clomid
With any prescription drug, it is important to weigh the benefits against the potential negative effects. This is true of Clomid (or Clomiphene), a drug used to treat infertility, as well.
Clomid functions by beating the estrogen to its own receptors in the body, thereby tricking the body into thinking that it is lacking in estrogen – which in turn, causes it to produce more follicle stimulating hormone, which encourages egg production in the ovary.
The drug does not have staggering success rates. About a third of women who take the drug succeed in becoming fertile again. That doesn’t seem very inspiring, but when compared to the success rate of other drugs, it is actually on the higher end. Another benefit is price; while there are other competitor drugs, few of them are as affordable as Clomid. For many people attempting to conceive, the combination of affordability and effectiveness make Clomid seem like some kind of wonder drug.
Yet, there are also a great number of negative effects associated with Clomid, some of which are severe. Some of these side effects are psychological. At least a quarter of those taking Clomid experience some form of moodiness, though it was usually manageable. Most, however, are physical and include hot flashes (which are caused by hormonal issues and are usually experienced during menopause), blurred vision (which can be permanent if not addressed and should result in disuse of the drug), and a thinning effect on the uterine coating (to the extent that the coating is reduced from the preferred thickness of 8 to 10 mm by several millimeters). Yet another side effect, which is a decrease in the production of cervical mucus, has the contradictory effect of making it harder for sperm to travel to the egg – part of why success rates are so low.
It is also important to remember that just because the body begins ovulating successfully does not mean that the baby will successfully be carried to term. Users should bear in mind that the side effects may be borne to no purpose.
For women who have no other option, the side effects may be worth it, however. Many parents feel their children are worth enduring any struggle. A doctor should be consulted every step of the way, if Clomid is chosen as a fertility drug.
