Cipro (ciprofloxacin)

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is a commonly prescribed antibiotic which causes bacteria in the body to stop its reproduction cycle. Because it works in this way, it is only an effective treatment for bacteria-based infections, not viral or fungi-based.

The antibiotic should be used with care and under the prescribing doctor’s supervision. Overuse can result in the drug becoming ineffective. It usually administered orally, via pill. General direction for Cipro (ciprofloxacin) advises that it be taken twice daily (when you wake up and before you sleep); you don’t need to take it with food, but you can. You should, however, consult with your doctor about taking other medications at the same time, as some drugs act as a binding agent, reducing its effectiveness. A pharmacist may also be able to explain which substances to avoid – this includes many over-the-counter supplements, such as calcium, magnesium and zinc, as well as most antacids.

You diet also affects the antibiotic’s ability to work. Since calcium is one of these substances, most dairy food (such as yogurt and milk) should be avoided. If you must consume it, do so at least six hours before taking your dose of Cipro (ciprofloxacin) or at least two hours after. If you must consume more calcium, work out a diet plan with a doctor or nutritionist that can counter the calcium’s binding effect.

Taking the antibiotic is a serious matter. Maintaining a constant level of Cipro (ciprofloxacin) within your body is essential to the fight against bacteria; skipping doses can allow the bacteria to flourish. Always take the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms subside after you begin the treatment. Stay well-hydrated and consult with your doctor if your condition shows no improvement.
