The Drug Atarax
Sometimes drugs are created for a purpose, and then have a better, secondary purpose discovered sometime after. This is exactly what happened with the drug Atarax. Atarax, which also sells under the name Vistaril and features the active ingredient hydroxyzine, was originally created as an antihistamine. Antihistamines are used to fight both allergies and allergic reactions, and hydroxyzine is one of the first released onto the market, many decades ago. It worked well, at the time of its release but medical advances through the years have found better solutions for allergy troubles. Ironically, it is a side-effect of the medication that has given it a new life. The drug has a strong sedation effect and these days, it is used to treat anxiety, nervousness and similar conditions.
Atarax or Vistaril (a rose by any other name), the drug is prescribed in the same fashion. The dosage varies depending on how severe the problem, but generally it is given in one of three different ways: through pills, in syrup and by injection. When prescribed, it is not intended for long term use, but rather as a short term solution.
You should be aware that the drug might be over-effective and sedate you quite a lot. Drowsiness, dizziness and other potential side effects mean that you shouldn’t attempt to drive a car or operate heavy machinery.
Despite the length of time which the drug has been available, there are still questions regarding its interaction with other drugs. You should always have a conversation with your doctor about other current prescriptions you are taking and how they might interact with the hydroxyzine; also, determine the risk if you are pregnant, as it is not known if Atarax or Vistaril could impact your pregnancy or transfer to your baby via breast milk.
